"I didn't want to call the police at first because I was afraid of the 'legal system.' I didn't want to go to court. I had heard that they put victims on trial. I was afraid they would bring up personal information about my sexual history in the courtroom. When I talked with an advocate at the crisis center, she told me that there are new laws that protect victims in court. She also told me that I could have a support person with me every step of the way."
