"How It Happens®" is a new resource for adolescents. More than half of all rape victims are under 18 years of age. Youths aged 12 to 17 are two to three times more likely to be sexually assaulted than adults. Most teens who are sexually assaulted or abused are victimized by someone they know. The Rape Treatment Center's new publication for teens is called "How It Happens®" a 33-page magazine/booklet, 9 x 12". Designed in an easy-to-read, magazine style format, the pages are splashed with color and full of teen stories - teens talking to teens about their experiences. The publication includes information about rape, childhood sexual abuse, and sexual harassment and what teenagers can do if they or someone they know is a victim. Special sections of the magazine are devoted to helping a friend, drug-facilitated sexual assaults, and safety on the Internet. A section on "Rape is a Guy's Issue Too" gives information to men about how not to "cross the line," ways to intervene in situations where someone may be at risk for rape, and what to do if they have been victimized or they know someone who has been sexually assaulted.
